Curiously enough..... Book Recommendations

Monday, May 20, 2013

I had a few minutes in between letting my bread rise and putting it in the oven, so I thought I"d hop on and say hello to all you out there and- what was that?
Oh yes.  I'm making bread.  Are you jealous?  Because you should be: It's Mrs. Smith's recipe and OH GOLLY is it good.  But back to the point of this post! :)

I've been reading a lot of things lately, and I wanted to share some of them with you.  Some of these are books I didn't like, and I'll tell you why in the summary below them, and some of them are ones that I absolutely loved!  So here we go.....

1. Princess of the Silver Woods

Now I really enjoyed this book- as I usually enjoy Jessica Day George's writing.  This was a redo of the Twelve Dancing Princesses, with Little Red Riding Hood incorporated in.  (I'm sure you can guess from the cloak!)  I won't give any secrets away, but what I love is that she makes most of the sisters (all twelve of them) very unique.  They do sometimes tend to blend together and get rather confusing on who's who and and who's married to who, (well there IS twelve of them!!!), but the main characters and the men who are helping them are all very unique.  I think that the guy who- okay, I won't say.  But his name's Oliver, and he's really cool!  One of my favorites.  Definitely.
Now one of the things I didn't like, and I think I already talked about it a little, but to me it was a little confusing, just the way she wrote it.  Some of the plot twists didn't make sense to me and didn't flow very well.  But that very well may have just been me!!!
This is actually the third book in a series, the first two being "Princess of the Midnight Ball" and "Princess of Glass".  All three are definite must-reads!

2. Jesus Calling

This book gets five stars in my opinion.  YES it's that good!  Oh I love it!!!!  It has challenged me, strengthened me, and helped me grow so much closer to God. It's a one-page little devotional for everyday with verses to go with, and it's Jesus talking to you.   Here's a little part...
Rest in my Presense, allowing me to take charge of today.  Do not bolt into this day like a racehorse suddenly released.  (I laughed, and blushed.  Guilty as charged)  Instead, walk purposefully with Me, letting Me direct your course one step at a time.  Thank Me for each blessing along the way; this brings Joy to both you and Me.  A grateful heart protects you from negative thinking.....

3. The Screwtape Letters

This books has it's pros and cons, but mostly pros.  But boy is it convicting!!!!!  It's from the point of a demon, who's writing letters as a mentor to a younger demon.  This demon is assigned to a human, and is in charge of making sure he doesn't even THINK about God, let alone become a child of Him!!!!
I loved the insights on the ways the enemy tries to trap us, and I know I've fallen for many of them.
The cons being you have to be older to read it, because there's definitely mature things in it.  Good things, but mature things.  The main character just has some things in his past that he has to tackle, things like what he's let his son get away with, and what he's let himself do.  Definitely a must-read!!
The book is based off of the Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis, which is also super good.

4. The Crimson Thread

This book is part of an amazing series called the "Once Upon a Time" series.  It's a lot of new takes on the classic fairy tales.  I will warn you though that some of them are very suggestive and not appropriate, so you might want to email me before you check any of them out of the library.
This one, if you haven't guessed it already, is on Rumplestiltskin.  One of the better ones, I think, I found it at Goodwill and was delighted!!  It's set in the real world, with an Irish girl as the main focus.  She's hired as seamstress and ordered to make amazing dresses, even though she's never done the fancy work that the dresses are supposed to have.  So a mysterious friend helps her, turning out gorgeous dresses.  His price?  Her first born child.....
Very good, very clean, and I liked it.

5. Jane Eyre

This one I'm still in the process of reading, though I'm almost finished.  I have to say, not one of my favorites!  The author tends to go on and one about things that later you find out weren't that important for you to know!  The plot itself is very weird, and gets creepy after the first hundred boring pages.  Oh yes, you'll have to plough through it all.  It's supposed to be a classic, so I think you should read it just for the practice of reading harder books like this.  And I know that there's nothing bad in it, many of my friends have read it.  So I'm not sure if I'd recommend it or not!  If you're looking for something creepy then read it.  If not- still read it.  It's not that bad!!

All in all I love to read, and I would recommend pretty much all of these books!!!!!  Thanks for sticking with me and listening to my rambling opinions.  Tell me some of your favorite books in the comments!

  1. Randy Alcorn's "The Ishbane Conspiracy". Same premise as lord foul grin's letters, but it is the sequel. It follows Jillian and Daniel and a few if their friends after their dad's death and it is incredible. DEFINITELY for a mature audience (dark stuff and some real consequences if immorality) but such an awesome way to identify satan's lies and schemes. Not to mention a super suspenseful plot! Umm, The Lord of the rings? Oh, and Jane eyre ... Except I'm in the ploughing stage:). Good round up Chloe!

    1. *gasp* There's a sequel? Yay!! Do you know if the library has it? Of course, the Lord of the Rings, but I didn't even want to begin to try and tackle reviewing that one!!!

  2. Good reviews, Chloe! I like hearing what other people think. I definitely enjoyed Princess of the Silver Woods! The only thing that I didn't find so great was how it had a lot of similar things to the first one, but it was most certainly better than Princess of Glass. The end of that one was just so disappointing.

What would I recommend? The Lord of the Rings and The Wingfeather Saga. (longdrawnoutpausebecauseseriouslywhatcanbebetterthanthosetwoseries')
No, honestly, that's all I can think of FOR NOW. I might be back ;).

  3. I love getting book suggestions. I often find myself wandering around the library hesitant to pick up a book when I have been disappointed by so many stories. (This hesitation usually leads to me reading a book I have read ONE HUNDRED times all ready, but I know I will love it!) Jane Eeyre is not my favorite either. I was expecting a Pride and Prejudice like story, and instead, I found a creepy, sad, dark story. :( Recently, I read the sequel to a story we listened to as a family years ago: "Our Only May Amelia" (yes, it is historical fiction, but I like it anyway! Very unusual for me!) It is a bit of a sad book, but I have still enjoyed it (several times!) Oh reading... when I start, I don't stop until I'm done... that really cuts into productivity! :)
