How To Have The Best Driving Test Ever

Monday, May 04, 2015

I'm gonna be very front up and honest with you about this; driving tests are TERRIFYING. But they don't have to be that way!!! Hopefully after reading these tips from this seasoned veteran ::cough:: you can take your test with way more confidence.

.+ Get to bed at a decent time the night before.  Seriously!  This is
important! Sleep is sometimes underrated but honey, we don't want no drooping eyes during the test.

+ Act confident!! You're a good driver, and they will be able to tell
if you're nervous.  Drive as if you were with your mom, be assertive, make good decisions, and remember that you are totally %100 able to pass this. After all..... --->

+ Not to sound obvious but this can sometimes be overlooked; don't just take your test because you're the right age.  Make sure you and a parent have both confirmed that you are definitely ready.

+ Go early in the morning so that one, you don't stress about it all day, and two because generally the DMV and the roads are generally less busy then. Killing two birds with one stone, peoples.

+ Don't feel like you have to make small talk the whole time. Asking questions is fun but it can distract you. I'd recommend saving them for the way back, once you know the route.

tumblr_m34p7zCyxN1qiy0obo1_500.gif (500×300)+ Don't try to rush through it or you might end up making a silly mistake because you went too fast. It's not like you have somewhere you have to be!
I did this when I cut someone off in an intersection. I freaked out and didn't stop to watch if the car across from me was turning into my lane. Can you say *facepalm*?! I knew better then that!

+ Oh and on that note, if you make a silly mistake, try not to dwell on it during the rest of your test. Make sure the driving instructor knows that you realize you did something wrong, but don't get so hung up on that you aren't paying attention to the test that's still in progress.

+ Try listening to some upbeat, hard core, motivating music beforehand.  Or if that's not your jam, go for the calming, peaceful soundtracks.  Whatever will get you in the right mood or mindset!

+ Don't feel like you have to tell everyone and their dog that you're taking it.  Honestly, the less people you tell the less pressure there is to pass the first time.

+ Word to the wise; don't forget to use your turn signal when parking!  They will penalize you for it if you don't :)

+ I think this is the most important thing to remember: if you fail the first time, don't stress! Think of it as an opportunity to learn and to get the nerves out. There are HUNDREDS of people who have failed before you.  Just shake it off, listen to some Taylor Swift, and re-take it like a boss.

And thanks to me, if you follow these tips you will come away from your test feeling like this:

Haha just kidding!  It'll be more like:

Noottttt even joking.

But then you get to take your siblings to sonic afterwards like this girl and you can drink a slushie of victory!!

I was soooooooo nervous and definitely made stupid mistakes.

I also almost cried when the instructor was telling me all the things I did wrong.

BUT I PASSED SO YEAH BABY. XD These are awesomesauce tips. However, I don't think I did any of them. XD You should have posted this before, Chloe! If I had failed I might have been tempted to blame it on you. ;-D (I kid, of course.)

    1. I was on the verge of tears too! I think all of the stress and fear and worry had just built up and I'm surprised I didn't explode. IT WAS SO FREAKY.
Haha I'm sorry! Glad you've dubbed my tips "awesomesauce" and I hope they will help other people. :)

  2. I. AM. FREAKING. OUT. I am taking my permit test and I'm so scared... and because of the reputation that this neighborhood has about raising drivers (I don't know if it's the air, but all of the learning drivers crash into the stop sign on the corner ever. SINGLE. TIME).

URGHHH. I'll keep these tips in mind! :)

    xoxo Morning

  3. I take my test next month, in a town that is terrible to drive in, most likely in a huge suburban, so I'm freaking out a little bit. These tips definitely helped. It's really hard when my driving instructor will tell me "They'll automatically fail you for this." Goodness. Did you have to do downhill or uphill parking? That's what I'm most scared about!

    1. You can do it, Molly!!! *fistbump* You'll rock it, I know. I didn't have to do either, but I had to mimic it. For example, I had to turn my tires towards or away from the curb, use the parking break, etc.
Good luck!!!!!! Eat a brownie beforehand to help you during your test. :)) That is obviously extremely beneficial.

    1. Well you aren't the only one, I freaked out and failed my first test too. It's ok! Good luck! oh and a suggestion? Eat a brownie before you take your test, read a book, take a shower, do SOMETHING to just make you relax so you don't get as anxious. You can do it!! :) :)

  5. THIS IS ALL PERFECT. XD I was freaking out when I took my test...but I think I did the "act like you know what you're doing so they'll believe you". ;-) It really does work. And I toootally agree with not telling everyone. You can put a lot of pressure on yourself if the whole world knows you're taking a test. *gulps* I think only my parents knew when I took mine (because, obviously, they had to drive me down there, haha). I passed on the first go so PHEW. So many nerves though!!
Thanks for stopping by @ Paper Fury!

    1. Seriously!! Glad I'm not the only one who basically "faked it until I made it". :D Yup, I tried to keep the news in my family circle. Even when I passed I was still glad I'd decided to keep it that way XD
      Thanks for your comment Cait!!!

  8. I failed my test the first time, but when I took it a second time, I got like a 96%. So yeah. It can be done. Plus, I know tons of people who failed their first test. (Most of my friends, actually.) If you fail, you're not alone, and you're not pathetic. And you can nail it the next time.

    1. Thanks for sharing this, Emily. I was the same way! My first test was basically a "practice test" as I got all my nerves out and then passed with flying colors the second time. *highfive* Isn't driving the bomb? :D

  9. In which my heart starts racing again just thinking of that dreaded day! You nailed it, hun! I would have been happy to have this reassurance from someone who had taken in recently, versus feeling I was navigating uncharted waters when I took the test. Great tips, great ending! :)

  11. I failed my test the first time and a co-worker told me to march back in there and schedule another test before I lost my nerve. So I did and I passed the second time. I really wish that I wouldn't have told so many people that I was taking it, because then when I failed, I had to tell a lot of people. That's my biggest advice, KEEP IT A SECRET!!

Anyways, great post! I'm sure it will be helpful to all of those who are taking it:)

    1. I totalllllyyy feel ya. When I took it the first time, I told a few people outside of my family, which I immediately regretted when I didn't pass. Although really, everyone will love and support you anyway, pass or fail! :)
      Thanks girl!

  13. Thanks for sharing these tips for passing the driving test in first attempt. Well I just got driving license. I took the training from a Port Macquarie Driving School. They teach driving quite professionally. I really like their way of teaching!
