7 Books Every Christian Young Woman Should Read

Thursday, January 22, 2015

It's about to get carazy up in here. THAT'S RIGHT: we're talking about books.

I'm such a party animal. You just have no idea.

-authentic beauty-by Leslie Ludy

I can't ramble or talk enough about this blessed book.  Authentic Beauty completely re-shaped my views on how I was approaching my relationship with Christ, my family, and even, yes, the g-word; guys.  Leslie Ludy is a fabulous author.

Goodreads synopsis: In a culture that mocks our longing for tender romance, in a world where fairy tales never seem to come true — do we dare hope for more? For every young woman asking that question, this book is an invitation. With refreshing candor and vulnerability, bestselling author Leslie Ludy reveals how, starting today, you can experience the passion and intimacy you long for.

-boy meets girl-
by Joshua Harris
I personally liked this book much better than I Kissed Dating Goodbye, which is also by Joshua Harris.
It was full of engaging stories and practical advice about what courtship looks like.  This is one of the only books on my list by a male author, so it's fun to spice it up with different tone and different content!  Because let's face it, boys and girls tend to write very differently.  Okay scratch that, girls and girls write very differently!

Goodreads synopsis:
Are you ready for “romance with purpose”?
If you’re fed up with self-centered relationships that end in disillusionment, it’s time to rethink romance. Finding the loving, committed relationship you want shouldn’t mean throwing away your hopes, your integrity, or your heart.
In Boy Meets Girl, Joshua Harris —the guy who kissed dating goodbye—makes the case for courtship. As old-fashioned as it might sound, courtship is what modern day relationships desperately need.

-when god writes your love story- by Eric and Leslie Ludy

I kind of like this author.  ^_^  God has gifted both Eric and Leslie, and it's fun to compare their unique writing styles.

Goodreads synopsis: In their most popular book, bestselling authors Eric and Leslie Ludy challenge singles to take a fresh approach to relationships in a culture where love has been replaced by cheap sensual passion. When God Writes Your Love Story shows that God's way to true love brings fulfillment and romance in its purest, richest, and most satisfying form.

-kisses from katie-
by Katie Davis

I believe I've recommended this book quite a few times over the course of this blog (three years and going strong!), but hey, I forget things so easily I might as well shove it in your faces again.  :)  This is a beautiful story of redemption, love, and an eighteen-year-old girl with no special talent other then her incredible love of her Savior that prompted her to leave her home and adopt fourteen little girls.  I will recommend this book every day and twice on Sundays.

Goodreads synopsis: Katie Davis left over Christmas break her senior year for a short mission trip to Uganda and her life was turned completely inside out. She found herself so moved, so broken by the people and the children of Uganda that she knew her calling was to return and care for them. Her story is like Mother Teresa’s in that she has given up everything—at such a young age—to care for the less fortunate of this world.

-crazy love-
by Francis Chan

I have to be crazy honest with you, I haven't entirely read this whole book.  But from what I did read, I was already sorely convicted!!  Francis Chan is one of "the greats" in Christian literature, and I really appreciate and have learned from his words.

Goodreads synopsis: Does something deep inside your heart long to break free from the status quo? Are you hungry for an authentic faith that addresses the problems of our world with tangible, even radical, solutions? God is calling you to a passionate love relationship with Himself. Because the answer to religious complacency isn't working harder at a list of do's and don'ts-it's falling in love with God. And once you encounter His love, as Francis describes it, you will never be the same.
Because when you're wildly in love with someone, it changes everything.

-sacred singleness-
by Leslie Ludy

Great words on the reality of the years of singleness (or even life) that many of us young woman will face.  Leslie offers encouraging words and inspiration for those in their single years and who might be struggling with peace and contentment.
Not that I can relate to being discontent.  PSSSSSHHHHHHH.

Goodreads Synopsis: Leslie shares firsthand stories and testimonials of modern-day single women who may sometimes struggle with loneliness and personal desires but who, in following God's plan for them, have discovered a deeper delight, purpose and true joy in their lives. "Sacred Singleness" gives every single woman the inspiration to live counter to the culture and find amazing opportunity in this sacred season

-anything-
by Jennie Allen

Would you be willing to give ANYTHING that God asked of you
at the drop of a hat?
One night, Jennie and her husband kneeled at their bed and prayed that God would show them what giving their anything looked like, and this morphed into a constant, every day prayer of "Anything, God!" I love Jennie's style of writing.  It's very easy to read, well thought out, and I feel calm and peaceful and TERRIBLY CONVICTED every flippin time I read it.  Gee thanks, Jennie.

Goodreads Synopsis: Safe. Comfortable. Happy.
Words we all love. Feelings we want. Even crave. We may love God, but being that he's invisible, words like comfortable seem to feel better faster.
We are all chasing something. Our hearts were made to run hard and fast after things that move us. But as a generation we are all beginning to stir and wake up, identifying that these words don't satisfy for long, especially when compared to God.

  1. Great post! I haven't read any of those books (even though I've heard about them a lot), but they sound really good. My family actually owns two of them...I'll have to pick them up!

Have you ever heard of Elizabeth George's books? She wrote "A Young Woman After God's Own Heart". Her "Young Women" books are mostly for younger girls, but they're great.
