Book Chewing: October

Saturday, November 01, 2014

Inspired by Cait from Notebook Sisters (*waves at Cait*), Book Chewing is my newest monthly blog series!  At the end of each month I'll show you guys the books I read and tell you my thoughts about each one, because obviously you want to hear exactly what I thought for each book.  Obviously.

This month I only read eight books, but I was so proud of myself.  I think I might've had two of the same genre, and that's IT.  There was everything from historical fiction, to autobiography, to teen fiction, to sci-fi fantasy, to just plain fantasy.

1.  Tiger Lily [By Jodi Lynn Anderson]

Poor, sweet, misunderstood Tiger Lily.  AAACK.  AND PETER.  How is it that Jodi Lynn paints Peter in so many different lights and it still makes sense?????

He is just too cute for this world.  Which is what made me mad about this book, coincidentally... HE LEFT TIGER LILY FOR WENDY!!!  PETER!!!!!

Jodi's writing style is different, no question.  And the fact that the whole story is narrated by Tinkerbell was really interesting.  But in the end I think it actually worked. I would've hated it if Tiger Lily had narrated, so we're good.
There's too many little nitpicky critical things for me to go into the whys and hows for you guys, but I think you should read this book anyway.  It's a FEELZY BOOK!

2. Fahrenheit 451 [By Ray Bradbury]
I loved this book. There, I said it.  It was a slightly violent older dystopian short little novel, and it was so creative and realistic that I just- I don't know.  It fit a part of my heart just right.  You have to read it to understand, though.
Also, is not the cover gorgeous?

3. Grace, Gold, & Glory [By Gabrielle Douglas]

The only thing I could think of while reading this book was this gif:

If you're going to fail, do it fabulously LOLOLOLOL

Thankfully Gabby didn't do this, but I'm always so scared for the gymnasts while they're performing. It's a very irrational fear, but then again, I have hundreds of those.  My irrational fear of other people failing is ranked up there with my irrational fear of gummy bears that aren't Haribou, the zombie apocalypse, and realizing I don't have my money halfway through the check-out line at Walmart.  Okay so that's actually very rational and likely considering this is me we're talking about.

4. Pendragon-The Merchant of Death [By D.J. MacHale]

All you Pendragon lovers out there, don't hate me when I say this, but I sincerely hope this series get better FAST because if the second book doesn't impress me more than the first, I might be calling this series quits.  I HATE doing that, truly despise myself when I don't finish a series, but sometimes- sometimes it just isn't worth my time.

Pendragon's tone of voice was really starting to grate by the end, and then the only girl in the story was as cliché as quite a few girl characters written by males.  Like, really.  I know of ZERO girls who act lall butt-kicky and tough like that 24/7!

57 [By Jen Hatmaker]
Jen Hatmaker is one of my  new favorite Christians authors.  In a word, she's a total clown!!!!!  She's witty and funny and slightly inappropriate (in a very Christian way, of course).
'7' is about her journey through seven months of fasting from things like internet, certain foods, worry, etc.  She is honest, real, and struggles with giving up her baked potatoes loaded with sour cream and cheese just as much as I would.  To understand why she's giving these things up just read her book!!  ^_^

6. Four [By Veronica Roth]

I'm sorry, but Veronica Roth cannot write 1st person male perspectives for the life of her.  If I didn't know any better, the main character could have passed for a girl's 1st person narrative.  WHICH IS NOT GOOD.

ALTHOUGH- Prettiest book cover goes to this one, I have to say.  Beautiful covers and art.

7.  Found [By Margaret Peterson Haddix]
I don't have much to say about this one.  Margaret Peterson Haddix and her books have been recommended over and over to me, but I must say, I was a little disappointed. For gosh's sake, you're getting threatening letters and seeing strange people in your room BUT YOU DON'T TELL YOUR PARENTS?  What's that about?!

[:O

8. Ben-Hur [By Lew Wallace]
Here's a five star classic that I liked.  It took a little time to get into, and there were a few descriptions that dragged, but I loved how they painted Christ.  He was so human and real and loving.  Loved it!

TO READ THIS NOVEMBER:

Pendragon 2
Sent (The Missing, #2)
The Merchant's Daughter
There You'll Find Me
The Phoenix Queen

BOOKS I AM CURRENTLY READING

May I just say, The Empire Striketh Back is BRILLIANT.  Pure genius.  I've started a notebook full of my favorite star wars lines-turned-Shakespeare.   I laughed out loud when I read this one: "O laugh indeed, thou fuzzball large!"  I must find a way to use this....

Any new books claim your heart this month?  How about the ones I read?  Do you have any favorites in there?

  1. I might have to take up this posting idea! Very cool. (: Only, it's been unfortunate, but I haven't had a lot of time for reading lately. :/ Some of these books look interesting, and I'll have to check them out!

    1. You go for it, I already stole it from another blogger, tweeked it, and it made it my own:)
Tell me about it! I thought life would calm down after volleyball but it almost feels more busy! So books have stayed on the shelf collecting dust so far this November.

  2. Fahrenheit 451 is pretty fantastic. :D I could write so many posts just about that book. :D I'm not surprised to hear that 4 isn't great, but then again, I haven't liked any of Roth's books. Also, I used to be a huge fan of Haddix, and Found was definitely the worst book by her I read. It was also the last.

    1. I'd love to hear your take on this book! I don't feel like I can do it justice in reviewing it, so I'll hand that responsibility off to you! You could probably do it better credit then I!

  3. I recently started (re-reading? Ha. It seems so familiar, and feels like I've read it, loved it, but just can't remember how it ends!) The Book Thief and I'd suggest you try it next. For some reason your mention of Fahrenheit 451 made me think of this book-perhaps because they both include the burning and stealing of books-in very different time periods.f
