How To Have A Productive Car Trip

Tuesday, September 01, 2015

Because of the season of life that I'm in right now, it feels like most days of my week are spent driving to and from places (Gee, do I sound like a grown-up or what?  Don't worry, it hasn't come to that QUITE yet).  Don't get me wrong, I love car rides. I really do!  A time to just sit and relax after constantly going?  Yes please.  But sitting is only fun for so long (I'm hard to please).  So what else is there to do except get creative?  Here are some of my favorite ways to make the most of my car time.  p.s. I really like #1.

(1) Don't laugh when I say I think sleeping is productive! Bring a pillow and a blanket, and as long as you aren't driving (hah!) seriously, catch a few zzz's. In our busy lives we often don't get enough sleep, so if you can, take a snooze on the road. Especially if it's raining outside. That is truly the perfect package.

(2) Bring homework. No, but seriously. When else are you going to have hours of time where there's nothing/nobody else clamoring for your attention? Use this time to study, so that when free time comes up you don't have to chisel out most of it for school. Trust me, been there and done that!

(3) Do you have quite a few thank you notes you need to write but never seem to get to? Bring them along and crank it out.

(4) Take time to talk! You can talk to God, talk on the phone, even (shocker!) to the people in the car with you. I think we're all guilty of vanishing into our own little world of entertainment on trips and don't take the precious time to even ask what our sister is thinking about vacation.  Ya feel me on this one?

(5) Listen to a CD of verses put to song.  Whether you focus on the lyrics or not, they will get stuck in your head!  Pros and cons, pros and cons :) I'd recommend Seeds CDs; catchy, but not redundantly so.

(6) Seriously, car trips are the best times to catch up on your audios.  Listen to a podcast! Two of my favorite speakers are Jennie Allen and Louie Giglio.  And hey, while we're on the topic, shoot me your favorite podcasts in the comments below!!  I'm always on the hunt for more!

(7) Write posts!  Whether you do it on a notebook, a computer (I'm impressed) or type it on your phone, DO IT.  For once I'm actually following my own advice and this post was started during a car trip!  I'm brilliant, I know.

And here's where the brilliance ends because..... you guys, I'm drawing a blank.  Um.  Eating is good, albeit a little counter-productive.  So is texting your friend and snapping 103 selfies (sorry snapchat followers!).  If you were so inclined, you could even do some good ol butt-crunches!  They start to burn after the first fifty, trust me.

Some trips, I just devour books and snacks.  Seriously, how do you think I got to Florida?  But when I have trips back to back to back (love you, sports season!) I like to mix it up.  These are a few of my go-tos when I know I have a long sitting time stretching ahead of me.

Hope your Tuesday is as terrific as you are,

Chloe

  1. On road trips I get so bored... I try to read but after awhile I feel like hurling, (same goes for when I try to sleep). Car trips here are pretty lengthy! Six hours would land my uncle in Atlanta all the way to Walt Disney World, and if I drive six hours where I live that isn't even half of my state. Eh. >.<

  2. CHLOEEEEEEEE! I love your posts so much. They make me so happy haha :)

This is such a great list of ideas! Oh how I wish I had the ability to sleep during car rides. I never seem to be able to do it! And you're so right- rain and sleeping are the perfect combination!

I really need to find some good podcasts! I never actually listen to them, but I've been wanting to get into podcasts for a while now. I'll have to check out those speakers that you recommended!

Usually, I spend about 90% of the time reading like, eight books until I give myself a headache. xD I'm definitely going to try some of these tips to switch it up to hopefully avoid that next time I travel! :)

    Fabulous post, as always Chloe!! :) <3 <3 <3

  4. These are fantastic ideas. I spend a lot of time driving, so I've had to learn how to take advantage of it. One of my favorite things to do is catch up on reading. Unfortunately, lots of people get car sick easily and thus cannot read while riding. If you can't read, spend time with the people in the car. I have so many wonderful memories of crazy conversations and bonding time while traveling with my sisters and friends. Also, car drive daydreaming can be productive if you limit yourself to editing novels in your head or writing blog posts. If you fall into the depths of dreamland, all productivity slips out the bug splattered windows : )

  5. When I took road trips as a little girl, I would do a lot of sleeping, reading, and writing. Now I think I would probably just sleep :P But that's definitely a good idea about the blog posts; I think I'll keep this post around for my next road trip! ^^

  6. Podcasts! Yes! Podcasts are the best. My two favorite podcasts are "The Portfolio Life" by Jeff Goins, and "This is Your Life" by Michael Hyatt. They both talk about blogging, writing, and lots of other things. I love them.

Reading is also awesome. I bring books on every road-trip. Sometimes like ten because I read fast when I'm really into it/have that much time.

  7. This post came right in time! I'm about to make a six hour drive twice this weekend, and we will all fall into the rut of what to do in the car. Because we travel pretty regularly as a family, we like to talk about many things (and around Christmas we hold our own Oscar awards for the year), play "I Spy" like games, and just think. We've also listened to audiobooks, but I love your idea of listening to podcast, something I've been meaning to start but haven't carved out the time yet. And Louie is the best! I've heard him live many times and can only imagine his podcasts!

As I've been doing a lot of driving a lot by myself lately, I've used this time alone to be not alone (because I'm never alone) and I pray. I found that my spiritual life grow a surprising amount just from this simple act!

    Great post as always!
